One of the biggest criticisms I have had of the Cleveland Browns is that this is a team without a plan. This is an organization that, since 1999, has had seven different GMs, eight different head coaches, and twenty-three different starting quarterbacks. The result of all this change is that the organization never continues along one path for any length of time. A regime comes in, creates a game plan for where they want to take the organization, begins to fill the organization with personnel that match the plan, and then it is time for another change.

Time for this to stop.

The Browns took a very pointed step this week in stopping this behavior by naming Josh McCown the starter for Sunday’s game against the Oakland Raiders. While most fans get tempted by the flash that Johnny Manziel showed last week, the more purposeful approach by the Browns serves the organization better longer term.

The Browns signed Josh McCown in March of last year with the thinking that he was going to be the starter for the Browns while they groomed Johnny Manziel to take over the role. Manziel was dealing with well-documented personal issues at the time, and the well-respected veteran McCown was thought to be the perfect QB to fill the role and help Manziel on and off the field.

The Browns stayed with that plan through the NFL Draft, mini-camp, training camp, and four pre-season games, before running McCown out there, as planned, to be the starter in the first regular-season game. In that game, McCown led the team down the field on their first drive and then sustained a concussion that unfortunately knocked him out for that game and the game the following week.

Johnny Manziel came in and led the team to their first victory of the season the following week and earned his spot as the Browns starter in the minds of many.

Not the Browns’ coaching staff, however.

In the postgame, head coach Mike Pettine was quick to praise Manziel but also point out his ball handling flaws and opportunities. The team evaluated Manziel’s performance during the week, and, more importantly, the health of McCown before naming McCown the starter for this week. The team did not seem to hesitate much in that decision once McCown passed concussion protocol.

I applaud them.

I was very encouraged by the job Manziel did while filling in for McCown. His performance last week was exciting and he proved to be able to make some big plays when the team really needed him. He also showed some flaws with the football as one would expect from him at this point. He looks like he has the potential to be a franchise quarterback long-term, which is great news.

The team believes that their best interests long-term are served with Manziel on the bench and McCown on the field right now. Although I can see the debate on this strategy from both sides, I believe the Browns are making the right call in sticking with the plan they have been executing for seven months rather than scrap it for an injury happening on the opening drive of the season.

There was no convincing new evidence that tells me this organization needs to deviate from the plan they have been working on for over half the year. That would have been the way the Browns had behaved as an organization in the not-too-distant past.

This organization is showing some mettle by sticking to their long-range game plan with McCown and I hope that the fans will let this regime see it through.
